All that Other Technology

We cover a wide range of technology in the classroom during our workshop. Yet there is always something else that you could use that we don't cover. For example, I often use the DVD player in the classroom to show movie clips.

The day before any DVD-based lesson plan, I bring in the movie and test out the system in the room. The remote may be missing or different, the podium control slightly different from the one in my room from last semester. Or I may have to navigate through a number of special menues to find the section I want to use. Sorting out the details the day before (rather than during the class or even ten minutes prior to it) give me time to trouble-shoot.

What other technology applications might you use that we haven't discussed in the workshop? Share your experience and ideas.

I'd also like to share with you this excellent resource: "The EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative's (ELI's) 7 Things You Should Know About...". This site offers a list of provocative technology applications on the cutting edge--it gives a brief overview of the application and then treats how it might be used in the classroom. If you ever need talking points about a tech application you're thinking of using, this is a great place to start!

I bet some people will have experience using various teaching software -- for example, I audited a course once that used a lot of stastics and the prof use an applciation called Fathom that is designed to help students visualize statistics concept. This led to a number of logistical issues such as making sure the application was available in a lab students can get to, and scheduling the classe into a room that had enough compters for everyone. Nonetheless, the benefits seemed to be pretty high, compared to teaching the concepts with out it.
